April 2008
April 14, 2008 We On Our Planet - Sculptural Exhibit
The Mississippi Valley Textile Museum is featuring a sculptural exhibition by Juan Geuer entitled “We On Our Planet”, major works of the past and his latest “conflicting reality” creation.
'We on our planet' lives in a state of conflicting realities and all Geuer's works although open to a variety of interpretations deal with that conflict. “Et Amor Fati” [For the love of Canada] can be seen as a sensing devise over a world greedy for her resources. Or is it just sailing away?
“The Loom Drum” and the “Rock Heist” tends to bridge the art – science dichotomy by demonstrating their common source. “Blatant” is a reflection on oppressive technocracy and rebellious burning desires, probably on a worldwide scale. “The Hellot Glasses” requires two people opposing each to complete the piece.

Geuer is a well known artist exhibiting widely in Europe, USA , Canada. New Zealand and Iceland. His career embraces half a century.

We On Our Planet will be on display at the Mississippi Valley Textile Museum from April 26th until August 15, 2008.

The Mississippi Valley Textile Museum is located at 3 Rosamond Street East in Almonte, Ontario. We are open from 10am to 4pm, Wednesday through Sunday. Admission is $5.00. For more information, please call (613) 256-3754 or email mvtm@magma.ca www.textilemuseum.mississippimills.com

September 2008
September 05, 2008 Fibre Fest takes place Sept. 5-8
The Mississippi Valley Textile Museum’s highly anticipated Fibrefest is returning for its 13th annual event on the evening of September 5th and full days on the 6th & 7th, 2008 at the North Lanark Agricultural Hall and the Mississippi Valley Textile Museum (MVTM). At both locations we will be featuring fibre art vendors, demonstrations, a quilt exhibit and a textile appraisal Fair two full-day festival of the fibre arts! Two exciting sites for one admission fee!
This year, we will continue to hold Fibrefest at two locations: in the newly renovated Norah Rosamond Hughes Gallery at the Mississippi Valley Textile Museum and at the North Lanark Agricultural Hall. On Friday evening from 7-9pm the MVTM will be hosting an opening gala and silent auction. The cost of this event is $10 each or two for $15. The Friday evening event will be held at the MVTM and the cost of this event will give you free entry for the rest of the weekend. If not attending the Friday event the entry fee on Saturday & Sunday will be $5 to both sites. Two locations present vendors of fibre arts supplies and finished goods, and throughout Fibrefest, local guilds will be on hand to demonstrate the arts of knitting, lacemaking, smocking, weaving, spinning, quilting, penny rugs and more!

Also featured during Fibrefest is the special exhibition 'A Day In the Life of Maggie M.' by Ottawa artist Michele Provost. This exhibit features intricate needlewok. The work that will be presented during this exhibition is the result of a 24 hour documentary incursion into the life of the chosen subject. The images, carefully selected and respectfully hand-stitched, speak of the daily gestures, common yet significant, that combine to define the basis of human existence. Chosen for its extreme simplicity, the medium facilitates direct communication with the viewer; one is physically drawn in by the sheer detail and the intimate size of the works. Thus is established a private dialogue between the artist and the viewer as two humans sharing a common experience. In a broader context, this work strives to illustrate our individual yet shared heritage, and to leave behind traces of humanity in a world of dehumanizing and globalizing frenzy.

The Friends of the Mississippi Valley Textile Museum will be providing tearoom services featuring homemade goodies, beverages and sandwiches all available at a reasonable price.

Admission to Fibrefest is $5.00, which includes access to both sites. Fibrefest runs on Saturday September 6 from 10AM – 5PM and Sunday September 7 from 10AM – 4PM at the North Lanark Agricultural Hall and the Mississippi Valley Textile Museum, just 35 minutes west of downtown Ottawa. The North Lanark Agricultural Hall is located at the Almonte fair grounds and the Mississippi Valley Textile Museum is located at 3 Rosamond Street East in Almonte. For more information contact the museum at 613-256-3754 or mvtm@magma.ca
